DEFINITION OF AROMATHERAPY Considered to be a branch of herbology, aromatherapy is the ancient practice of using pure essential and absolute oils extracted from plants to treat and heal imbalances of body, mind, spirit and emotions. The effects of aromatherapy include:
Smell is first sense that develops in newborn baby, and is most acute of all senses. When the aroma is inhaled, the scent goes to the olfactory receptors (over 5 million cells in the nasal passages linked to smell). The olfactory nerves are connected to the limbic system, which is the base for memory, emotions and sexual arousal. When we smell a certain aroma, it can bring to mind a certain memory or excite certain emotions. Inhaling the oils allows the aromas to enter the lungs through the respiratory system by attaching to oxygen molecules that circulate the body, thereby enabling the body to heal, relax and maintain health. Essential oils can also be applied directly to skin. The oils are easily absorbed through the skin and penetrate the bloodstream. This allows the oils to travel to the organs and lymphatic systems, helping to strengthen the immune system and boost the immune response. Aromatherapy works to encourage health and bring the body into balance. The theory is based on the fact that the olfactory and emotional centers are connected. By inhaling different aromas, emotional concerns and physical complaints can be eased. Aromatherapy can: · strengthen the immune system · reduces aches and pains · relieve stress · increase energy · promote feeling of well-being Aromatherapy relies on the use of essential oils derived from plants, and doses are given in small amounts due to the high concentration of oils. Essential oils are found in very small amounts in the bark, petals, leaves, resins and rinds of plants. They are extracted from the plants by various methods including pressing, distillation, tapping and separation using heat. The essence is what gives the plant its characteristic odors. The oils are derived in extremely concentrated forms, and may require hundreds of plants to yield only a small amount of an essential oil. Oils evaporate easily, but do no dissolve in water.
